Cairo - City of the living
A view which every first time visitor to Cairo will cherish is that of the Great Pyramids of Giza rising mysteriously from the desert. The sheer scale of these man-made wonders is enough to take your breath away. Cairo's other attractions include the famous Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, home to the treasures of Tutankhamen, the eerie Mummy Room and numerous other priceless artefacts; the majestic Saladin Citadel of Cairo with impressive battlements and beautifully decorated walls and ceiling, and calm serenity of the Mosque of Mohammed Ali; and the charming chaos that is the labyrinthine Khan el-Khalili bazaar with its colourful stalls and coffee shops. it's the ideal place to strike a bargain with one of the many spice merchants or simply relax with a cup of hibiscus tea whilst watching the world go by.
Luxor - The biggest open air museum in the world
Luxor, formerly known as Thebes, is situated on the East Bank of the Nile and is a fantastic base for exploring the numerous sights, temples and museums of Upper Egypt including the temples of Karnak and Luxor. Karnak, easily the larger of the two, stretches over an incredible 100 hectares and features vast columned halls, enormous monolithic obelisks and temples beautifully engraved with ancient hieroglyphs, Karnak Temple comes alive at night with an atmospheric Sound & Light show where voices and lights guide you around the salient points of the site. Luxor Temple, although smaller, is no less impressive. Time your excursion here in the early evening and your tour will be combined with the sounds of Luxor coming to life and the haunting Arabic call-to-prayer being hailed from one of the many surrounding minarets. The city of Luxor itself is home to many bustling markets, shops and Egyptian and international restaurants.
Aswan - Egypt's southern sun
Aswan lies approximately 80km south of Luxor and is the former frontier town and trading post between Egypt and Nubia. Cross the Nile to Elephantine island and discover a rich mix of ancient temples, the Aswan museum and even an ancient granite "step pyramid". Look further and discover its nilometer, one of just 3 stations used to measure the water level of the Nile (and still being used as recently as the 19th Century). Aswan is also a fantastic base to explore other attractions such as The High Dan, Abu Simbel and Lake Nasser.
